Broken Neutrals in low voltage Poly and
3-Phase electrical supply networks are more common than we think.
They occur as a result of the Supply Neutral becoming Open Circuit due to poor installations, aging infrastructure, compromised terminations as well as essential infrastructure theft or tampering.
The impact of this phenomenon presents a high risk of electrocution to household residents, this notwithstanding the fact that damages to appliances and the potential risk of fires occur as a result of potential overvoltage conditions.
Furthermore there is an associated risk
with limited operation of Residual Current Devices (RCD) or Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) under Broken Neutral conditions.
The high probability of electrocution, appliance failure and fire is thus extremely real in such circumstances and requires intervention to mitigate for the phenomenon.
